Review: Color of Rage

Author: Kazuo Koike
Manga-ka: Seisaku Kano
Publisher: Dark Horse
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: May 2008

Synopsis: “Two slaves free themselves from a slave ship, one a Japanese man, the other an African American. After escaping they find themselves on the shore of Edo-era Japan, a society with a strong caste system, isolated from the world. How will the Japanese people perceive this giant black man, how will they survive? But first things first, how will they get these shackles off their feet?”

This was an interesting book to read because the general intent of the manga-ka was so apparent that it felt almost too forced. While attempting to show multiple cultures from a unique perspective, instead it felt like one layer of stereotype over another. While the story being written in the seventies does cause me to give it some more patience, the final result seems a little misinformed, and mostly overzealous in its execution, but still with presumably noble intentions.

Kuriousity Sweeps Across the Internet!

Well, not exactly, but while doing some recent (and much needed) tidying up around here, I’ve also created a LiveJournal account specifically for my updates here at Kuriousity. I get a lot of hits from LJ, mostly from links and feeds from other sites who utilize LJ in this way, so with a good audience using the site, I thought it’d be a useful feature to get in on. So if you’re a LiveJournal user, and like following site updates through it, you can now use that handy little stripbutton on my side bar, or click right here, to go to Kuriousity on LJ. Shorter posts will be seen there in their entirety (some of you may even be reading it there now, hmm?) but longer articles and full reviews will remain exclusively posted here, with links on LJ leading you to their full versions.

Tidying-wise for the interested, my sidebar now looks much less cluttered with the archives smushed down into a handy little dropdown menu (it’s so beautiful…) and some new links have been added to the Blogroll. There’s also a banner link to Tina Anderson and MTCopyright’s webcomic, Whore of Turfan (updates every Friday! 18+ only) and a link to my Twitter account, for any who like my random ramblings enough to see them in frequent, tiny form.

And finally, though completely unrelated to my website in anyway, here’re a few fun links of the day:

Review: Red Angel (Vol. 01)

Manga-ka: Makoto Tateno
Publisher: DMP
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Released: June 2008

Synopsis: “From the streets of New York and the hallways of a Japanese high school, to the confines of a British boys’ school dormitory, Mika and her twin persona, Eru, have stalked and hunted. The two are vampires – creatures driven by their thirst for blood. A fateful encounter with the enigmatic Kinsei reveals a clue to a forgotten past. Mika remembers nothing but Eru knows of a shared past with Kinsei. Though Kinsei seems like a vampire, he also hunts at being something more.”

Red Angel is a two-volume series by Makoto Tateno, a manga-ka better known by English manga fans as a creator of popular boys’ love series, including DMP’s Yellow and the currently published, Hero Heel. DramaQueen’s Drama, Yaoi Press Year End

A few recent boys’ love events of note:

The drama over at Drama Queen’s forums continues with fans up in arms over their continued disorganization, misinformation and the latest in a string of broken promises. Some intelligent comments are made about DQ’s consistent failure as a business and I’m certainly enclined to agree. It’s been a long, sad road and DQ’s possible return no longer looks optimistic as much as it just shows how easily a so-called company can mess with its dedicated fans, not to mention contributers. For shame, DramaQueen.

And after failing to deliver on promised release dates for Tyrant Who Falls in Love twice, LadyQ on the forums pulls out a very familiar excuse:

“OK – DON’T PANIC! Tyrant is on it’s way – there’s a minor problem on our printing (nothing major!) so we’re working on it to get it printed asap.

Please know that Tyrant will be out – we will not be able to make it for Christmas delivery – but we’re shooting for January. I know how you all must feel, but please know that this time, it was not within our control when the problem arose ><! “

Maybe you should just, I don’t know… wait until you actually have something before you promise it to people?

On a much more positive note, Yamila has posted her end of the year report for Yaoi Press. They’re obviously feeling the current economic crunch but remain optimistic about things to come. One of their upcoming changes is the format of their books which will have higher page counts and larger trim sizes. It’s a good read for both fans of their releases and as a view of how one of the few consistant publishers in these rocky times is getting by.

Over at her blog, Tina Anderson makes some suggestions for some global BL reading for the holiday vacation. There’re some great titles on the list so check it out if you’re looking for some good reads that are refreshingly different from your usual yaoi fare.

And finally, in referrence to the appearance of In God’s Arms on Amazon (slated for a July 2009 release), a fan has been circulating an e-mail they recieved from Seven Seas telling them that the license for the boys’ love book by Nekota Yonezou had indeed been lost. While this doesn’t come as a surprise, and it’s more likely Amazon just regurgitated the listing, wouldn’t it be a much nicer thought that a license lost could infact now be a license found?

YTV Snags Pretty Cure

In a bit of a surprising move, YTV has made a deal directly with TOEI animation to bring their anime series, Pretty Cure, to Canadian televisions. Some may recall that the American company 4Kids had licensed the series originally but failed to air it. The series will be getting the classic anime-to-TV treatment with some character renaming, an English dub and most likely some cultural-note tweaks and possible censoring (does Pretty Cure need censoring?).

Related: I’ve recently updated the Anime in Canada page. I’ve removed the schedules since I don’t watch anime on television, so keeping up with what played when became near-impossible. The list now shows which Canadian station is playing what and I’ll leave it up to the stations’ websites and local television listings to tell you the rest.

Review: Black Sun

Here, two-hundred Monastic Knights make their final stand against a league of 20,000 Middle Eastern soldiers led by General Jamal Jan. Called “beardless” by some, “shameless” by others, Jamal soon seizes the castle and its acting commander, Prince Leonard de Limbourg. The general’s ideas of how to subjugate the enemy do not conform to the typical rules of warfare, however. In quick order, Prince Leonard finds himself stripped naked and forced to perform in front of his own men. Leonard’s humiliation does not end there; now the general’s captive slave, he is brought back to a strange land and presented before His Majesty the Sultan. Will Jamal’s deviant attentions lead to certain punishment for both he and Prince Leonard?”

A battle of thousands versus mere hundreds leaves the commander, Prince Leonard, looking for a way out that won’t leave the castle stained with the blood of his men. In exchange for their safety, he surrenders himself to the enemies General, Jamal Jan. Mangettes: Gate 7

So soon to have my holiday shopping bumped from the top! Guess this means I should upgrade my WP for that handy sticky feature… In the meantime, this is CLAMP news so I’ll let the bumping pass!

Back in July 2007, Dark Horse announced their plans for a joint project with the popular manga-group, CLAMP, to create a series of releases called mangettes. Little else has been told about the stories CLAMP would be doing for these small 80-page digests, or when we’ll be seeing these simultaneous releases… until now! Dun dun dun… All dramatics aside (as a big geeky CLAMP fan, yes I consider this semi-dramatic), Amazon has yet again provided manga fans with a glimpse into the future:

Mangettes: Gate 7
CLAMP

“Between our conscious, waking world and the subconscious state of slumber, there is a thinly veiled plane of lucid dreaming. While the conscious state belongs to individuals, the hidden plane of dreams is one shared by all human minds, past, present, and future. Yet only a few have ever possessed the power to enter this secret realm at will – where a war is being waged to control the waking world. For our earthly wishes and desires are not our own, but under the manipulation of these unseen masters of dreams. The heroine of Gate 7 is Hana, a high-school girl hailing from Kyoto, the daughter of a temple caretaker. Her peaceful ways give her the self-control to act in the hidden realm. But Hana can only reach it through the strange beast that acts as her totem in the world of dreams – and her companion on a journey to confront the puppeteers of our reality!”

Doesn’t sound like CLAMP is going far from their current bubble but I’ve no complaints and of course look forward to the first release of these mangettes (with Gate 7 scheduled for August 2009 according to Amazon). I also look forward to seeing which of the group will be lead artist this time around; Mokona? Nekoi? Looking forward to the shiny either way.

But there’s so much out there to choose from (and not always affordable options either!), and buying for an anime and manga fan isn’t any easier with all the goodies out there.

So while I was sitting and pondering some of my own gift-buying dilemmas for my friends, I thought I’d put together a list for people that may offer some helpful inspiration. You can read it all under the cut.

Saturday Splunks

Eventually I’m going to run out of titles completely based on what day of the week it is. I’m only so creative on no hours of sleep! While I finish up some work on an incoming post on holiday shopping (complete with too many random colourful pictures of course), here’re some more Amazon-related finds which may or may not be new but were atleast of interest to me so I like to think satisitically must be of interest to atleast someone else out there! If you’re that person (or people?) then this post is for you :)

As usual, keep in mind that these listings may not be entirely accurate and pending official recognition and announcement from publishers, cannot and should not be considered 100% confirmed. This is especially true regarding release dates. Check it all out under the cut.

Review: Love Mode (Vol. 11)

Manhwa-ga: Yuki Shimizu
Publisher: BLU

While Aoe can’t deny his feelings for the happy-go-lucky Shiki, he can’t shrug off his duties to his family. The tension and seduction builds to an unexpected event that will rock his world forever!”

Volume eleven marks the end of Love Mode, a character-driven story of men brought together by a bomcintion of their business and pleasures. As testament to her skill, Yuki Shimizu has left pinnacle events in characters’ lives a mystery until this final point, revealing to readers past events in what is easily one of the most dramatic books of the series.

Review: Fairy Cube (Vol. 03)

Manga-ka: Kaori Yuki
Publisher: Viz
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Released: November 2008

Synopsis: “Ian and Rin used to just see spirits. Now Ian is one. Using the Fairy Cube, Ian must figure out how to stop the lizard-spirit Tokage from taking over his life and destroying any change he has a resurrection. Will Ian save Rin? Can he stop Tokage? Ian only has one change left to get his life back!”

I’m going to be frank with this one: I was totally lost for a good portion of this book. Odd as it is to say, I felt like this last volume suffered from being too much of a Kaori Yuki book. There were just too many characters who weren’t fully explained, many were dropping like flies, several were switching sides, some were actually related, some weren’t, one was a different gender, a few wanted to destroy the world and others wanted to save it, and all of them were coming about these developments at the same time, in the same place, while battling for page time against flashbacks and numerous almost-death scenes.
