FCBD 2008 Manga Recap

Free Comic Book Day 2008

Another successful Free Comic Book Day completed. There was a big turn out (as usual!) at Strange Adventures in downtown Halifax and many free comics to be had. Along with my joyfully larger assortment of X-men comic books and indie publications, I picked up a copy of Viz’s Shonen Jump sampler and Yen Press’s Maximum Ride preview issue.

Those who picked up Viz’s Shonen Jump sampler were treated with some exerts from Naruto, Bleach and Slum Dunk (which was in colour), three of the series currently running in the English edition of the popular manga anthology. A nice surprise was the pull out mini Bleach poster.

Yen Press’s preview issue of Maximum Ride was also something I was glad to have picked up. NaRae Lee’s artwork in this adaptation was really eye-catching, and though I’ve never read the original novels, I think this is a series I’ll be checking out. On the back of the preview was an advertisement for Yen Press’s upcoming monthly manga anthology, it’s first issue example sporting a picture from their recent license, Soul Eater. With a line up including that, Nabari No Ou, Maximum Ride and Svetlana’s new series, Nightschool, Yen+ is looking to be an impressive selection of titles for those looking for something different than the usual fares of Shonen Jump. Sign me up!

GoComi Blogs from Japan, Cantarella Returning?

canta.jpg

Go!Comi’s blog has been updated recently with the beginning of what’s to become daily updates about their staff trip to Japan.

The recent post talks about their lunch date with You Higuri, popular artist of Seimaden and Gakuen Heaven. When asked about if she would continue her series, Cantarella (which was put on hold so she could finish her other series’ currently running in Japan), the manga-ka responded with hopes of being able to bring the now 10-volume series to a conclusion. Good news for fans of the series! Me included of course. Go!Comi is currently releasing the books in English.

Staffers on the Go!Comi forums also say to keep an eye on their blog for an upcoming contest since the recent end of their ‘Five Books for Five Winners’ contest.

Blade of the Immortal Anime Preview

anatsu.jpg

The official Blade of the Immortal anime website is now streaming a preview of their upcoming adaptation of Hiroaki Samura’s manga. You can check that out here. (via ANN)

The character designs look good thus far, I’m impressed with how well they took Samura’s distinct style and simplified it, while still keeping the character’s defining shapes. The music seemed a little odd to me, not bad, just different. Blade of the Immortal was one of my first favourite mangas, back when Dark Horse still released it exclusively in floppie form. Too bad buying them in graphic novel form today still isn’t much cheaper. Definately an anime I look forward to.

Space removes Robotech

As read on Zannen.ca, it seems that Space Channel has removed Robotech from their airing schedules. Their reason is stated as poor ratings.

Well no surprise there. For its short run on Space, Robotech was given a mid morning, weekday timeslot. Ouch. I don’t know who they were aiming it at but apparently whoever it was, they’re hoping will be more appeased with Robotech‘s replacement: more Relic Hunter reruns.

Domo-kun!

Taking a break from some coding work, I turned on the television to see… Domo? On my television set? Works for me! So I guess the episodic Domo-kun shorts will now be used as show-inbetweens on the Canadian channel, Teletoon. News to me but a great early morning treat. Love that toothy brick.

BeBeautiful on the Internetz

During random internet surfing, I found myself on BeBeautiful‘s website, a site that’s been down for quite a while now. It still hasn’t been updated since 2006 but I can’t help but be curious that it’s suddenly appeared again after having a placeholder image for so long.

As a quick recap, BeBeautiful is the CPM-sister publisher releasing English-translated yaois including Kizuna and Embracing Love. BB was the group involved in the well-publicized ‘scandal’ regarding the illegal release of their books in light of the Biblos bankruptcy in Japan in 2006.

Anime North Guests Update

animenorthlogo.jpg

Just a quick update today about some new guests announced in recent weeks by the staff of Anime North. New guests include Studio Udon, Tara Tallen and Yamila Abraham. You can read about all the guests at AN’s guest page. Anime North is the largest anime-based convention in Canada and runs May 23-25 this year.

801Media Issues Lil Warning

801Media’s 801-chan has issued a little warning on their blog to readers that they’re soon to be in short supply of various titles. They don’t list specific titles (though do mention it’s relevant to early 2007 titles) to avoid panic and the like, but want people to remember it’s something to keep in mind. Titles won’t always be around and due to prices, can only be printed in limited runs. Something to keep in mind for any putting off purchases!

Also posted there today is information on their appearance at DMP’s panel at New York Comic Con, including some discussion at the panel on new acquistions for 2008-2009. Some yet to be announced titles? Who knows (but I suppose we will on April 19th).

More DB Surfaces

dragonball13.jpg

… for better or worse? via ComingSoon.net, Joblo.com has posted a bunch of set shots from the upcoming live action Dragonball movie (which has currently wrapped up filming).

Comments: Goku… um… well it’s what I expected, and I’m not terribly surprised, but the fangirl in me who wants to be a whiney-complainer just can’t let it go. He better get a tail, I wanna see a cheesy CGed tail swinging around behind at some point. Entertain me!

The monsters at the top look kinda neat. Far better than some of the other monster costumes we’ve seen from set shots so far. I think these are the first I won’t cross my fingers for some ass-saving overlayed CG effects to save ’em…. whoever/whatever they are.

Picture four, anyone else get a major Wolverine vibe?

And an Original Retro Robot, hmm? Merely a cheesy background decoration? Capsule Corp’s new invention? A possible new sidekick for the Goku reinvention?

My mind remains open that this can atleast prove entertaining (good or bad, really) but I’m having horrible Double Dragon live-action flashbacks.

Yum Yums

Little manga news heads-up today for some coming-soonish titles. You can tell I’ve been shopping when these posts pop up!

The omnibus edition of Aoi House, an OEL manga about two college boys who accidently find themselves residents of a yaoi fanclub dorm house, comes out in a few weeks (April 15). It’s a great value for a series that’s really cute, entertaining and sporting some terrific artwork!

Also over on Amazon.ca, you can take a peek at the coloured cover for the upcoming Yaoi Hentai replacement, Happy Yaoi Yum Yum, published by Yaoi Press. The name has yet to grow on me but two thumbs up from me for the cute logo work.

“Yaoi smut tastes better when it’s happy and fun! The successor to the ultra popular Yaoi Hentai anthology features a yaoi take on Jack and the Bean Stalk, a sexy romp with two gay porn stars, a brand-new Trach the Tentacle monster story, and more! “

And on the non-yaoi front, Chapters has up a listing for the December 2008 release of the Clover Omnibus, volume one. Clover is a short manga series by CLAMP and is currently out of print by Tokyopop. Though labelled as volume one, with a page count of 512, this is most likely the entire four-volume series (though being such a short series, 512 seems a bit high. Misprint?). A beautiful series that I recommend, especially for CLAMP fans. I love the cover slips of Tokyopop’s earlier releases of this series, so I hope the omnibus is treated with the same quality.

Take me back to the top!
