Viz Media Now Accepting Proposals For Original Series

Viz Media Now Accepting Original Comic Proposals

After almost a year’s silence, and a sudden though exciting mini-announcement to kick it off, Viz Media is now accepting proposals and submissions for original series. A posting on Viz Media’s blog offered just as few details as the Twitter posting that originally let me know, but at least the concept itself is pretty self explanatory. Have a story or series that you’ve been working on and believe is ready for publication? Put together a pitch package and submit to Viz for consideration!

Last we heard anything substantial about Viz’s original pitch project was back in February when news circulated that Viz Media was putting their original submission project on hold. It previously had a short run when Viz held portfolio reviews at SDCC 2008 and more recently when Viz Media editor Eric Searleman appeared alongside other comic industry folk for panels and portfolio reviews at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Creators and the curious can download their Pitch Submission Release (PDF) which is to accompany all submissions to Viz Media. It also includes the physical address of where to send your material.

What I’m curious about now, same as I was when they originally shared that they’d begin actively seeking this kind of original material, is what kind of stories we may see from this endeavour. Are they looking for any particular genres? Certain age targets? Minimum or maximum lengths? Straight to graphic novels or serializations? Things are pretty vague right now but if Viz recieves a good amount of submissions, it’ll be interesting to see if they put some suggestive guidelines in place.

Simon from Icarus Publishing brings up excellent points about the incredible circulation power that Viz’s Shonen Jump magazine has to offer and the likelihood that creators could retain their copyrights to the works submitted. With the growing popularity of Viz’s online manga reading websites, Shonen Sunday and IKKI, there’s also a great potential for original works to be offered to new readers in the digital format as well, offering Viz a chance to promote and ‘test the waters’ without immediately committing to print. This is similar to the benefits both Tokyopop and Digital Manga have recently begun to really dig into with their current online releases of material from creators around the world.

Personally I’m really eager to see what kind of stories and artists come out of the woodwork to submit. Hopefully we’ll see some returning faces along with some great new talent. Best of luck to those who submit – take your time, do your best, aim to impress and have fun!

Kuriousity at SDCC: Viz Media Manga & Anime

Viz Media's Shonen Sunday

It’s Viz again today as a full room is present to hear the news at Viz Media’s Manga & Anime panel. As with the previous panel, I’ll share the big updates here and then update later with the complete panel information later this evening.

The panel opened up with information on the previously announced Shonen Sunday. Viz staff shared some information about Shonen Sunday’s history (had no idea it’d been around in Japan since 1939!) before showcasing the current titles available in the new imprint:

Rin-Ne – Rumiko Takahashi
Kekkaishi – Yellow Tanabe
Arata: The Legend – Yu Watase
Maoh: Juvenille Remix – Kotaro Isaka & Megumi Osuga
Hyde & Closer – Haro Aso

The new titles which have not yet been released by Viz, will be available in book form in 2010 but are currently being released per chapter (for free!) over at the spiffily launched ShonenSunday.com.

You can read lots more under the cut:

Kuriousity at SDCC: Day One

San Diego Comic Con International

Day one of SDCC wraps up tonight and what a day it was! My 6000km trek across the continent that was full of trials standing between me and Comic Con, from barely connecting flights to lost luggage and no hotel room. But, patience and perserverance wins in the end and I was able to join fellow con-goers in enjoying day one (and writing about it on no sleep. It’s all about the con experience!). On that vague note, please excuse any crazy spelling errors or icky photo placement. My SDCC posts will all recieve a cleaning up once I return home from my trip.

As today was preview night for 4-day badge holders, press and professfionals, there wasn’t anything in the way of panels occuring but that didn’t mean the thousands of people who flocked to San Diego to attend didn’t find exactly what they were looking for. Open to the public after a slightly disorganized, but still very smoothly executed, registration, Comic Con International’s exhibitor area (“San Diego Comic Con”) was officially open to its eager audience.

You can read about my initial manga finds on the floor and see some photos after the jump.

VIZ Media Announces New Imprint – Shonen Sunday

Shonen Sunday

To think it feels only like yesterday Viz announced their IKKI online magazine and imprint. Today another press release circulated about Viz’s next endeavour, a second online magazine and imprint: Shonen Sunday.

The claim is that they will be releasing the first manga to ever be published simultaneously in Japan and North America. I certainly look forward to it! Badly resisting the urge to point out another such project that hasn’t really taken off yet… Viz’s array of titles has really branched out and taken off recentlyand I can’t wait to see what other titles this new collection will have to offer.

The imprint’s website, Shonen Sunday, currently has only a placeholder but it shows several series that are likely to be the initial licenses for Viz’s new line of books. The full site will go live on July 22nd. Viz Media has also let fans know that they’ll be announcing several of these titles at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con.

Rin-ne, the new supernatural series from Rumiko Takahashi, will be the first graphic novel released under the new imprint name. The series is still uploaded for free reading by Viz on a weekly basis, as a simultaneous release with Japan, over at The Rumic World website.

The full press release is available to be read here.
