BLU Takes a Hit

In light of Tokyopop’s cutback news yesterday, including 39 layoffs (about 1/3 of the employees based on recent numbers), the effects of this news is already being felt. The forum reps for BLU manga responded to questions about if their parent company’s changes would affect them and it seems that’s already the case. One of the two site reps has been laid off (known on forums as Midorihebi) and Shonen-Ai-Samurai, one of BLU’s editors has this to say:

“This is a very unfortunate situation for us all and I’m close to tears right now just thinking about how I won’t have Midorihebi here to help me out any more. She’s done an awesome job the last 6 months or so checking the BLU emails and always being there to support BLU. She was so looking forward to representing us at Yaoi-Jam but those plans have been canceled now and Yaoi-con plans are also up in the air. Times are very tough right now and with problems in the bookstore industry, we’re facing a lot of challenges. I don’t know exactly how things will end up right now but I would expect some changes in the BLU release calender. Hopefully the changes will be minimal. We have had a lot of success selling our books on Amazon so I want to thank you all who support us even when you can’t find the books in stores.”

No doubt we’ll be hearing more news like this in the near future as the anxious wait to hear who’s cut: both employees and series.

Svetlana Chmakova Makes Manga Television

svetlanachibi.jpg

Animation World Network posted an article today about an upcoming animated television show titled My Life Me. It’s described as “a fast-paced and visually inventive animated comedy aimed at kids ages 8 to 12.”

What makes this interesting? Well a couple things. First of all is that one of the series pro-creators is none other than Svetlana Chmakova, known for her Tokyopop hit, DramaCon. It also sounds like it’ll be an interesting series visually with the following to say about it:

“Produced entirely in digital animation, this series stays true to manga aesthetics using various comic book manga codes and language such as stylish black and white comic book panels dropping behind the characters to express their suppressed feelings on screen. This novel approach adds an extra layer to the narrative and comedy.”

Certainly sounds interesting, and with backing from Canadian cartoon network, Teletoon, we can definately expect to see it air in Canada for it’s anticipated appearance in Fall 2009. (Above picture belongs to Svetlana but is unrelated to this animated series)

Edit: Did a little searching and found the teaser clip that was submitted to Teletoon during My Life Me’s proposal! You can check it out here.

Wednesday What Have-Yous

Just a few links today before I upload the next review in ghost story week. And speaking of reviews, next week I’ll be taking a break from the themes and older series, to put up some reviews for a few new releases! I’m glad people have been enjoying the theme idea, I really appreciate the kind words of those who’ve taken the time to comment and e-mail me about them! A new theme will begin after the week of new release reviews.

First of all, those who make frequent visits to the manga blogosphere have probably come across the debates and mild-outrage towards Tokyopop’s Manga Pilot contract. MangaBlog‘s Brigid shares her take on the casually constructed contract over at DigitalStrips.com, and makes some good points. A good place to start for a thoughtful and calm look at what’s sparking people into verbal action.

Second, for those who enjoyed Jonathan Clement’s work for (and in) NewType USA or some of his books, including The Anime Encyclopedia, you’ll be happy to know he has a new book coming out called ‘Schoolgirl Milky Crisis: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade’. Note: Schoolgirl Milky Crisis is a referrence to a non-existant anime series he used, in place of series he actually worked on, while writing about his experiences in his NewType USA column. No synopsis yet on the book itself but I think the title speaks for itself fairly well and it has the potential to be a pretty interesting read.

And elsewhere, there was some talk about the DramaQueen website being down for a number of days. Hopes were high that its return might symbalize some update content or information, but with its return this morning, that unfortunately does not seem the case. Hopefully Taisa will come through for the patient and shed some more light on DQ’s position at the end of the month.

Selling diaries of death?

Just some random thoughts today. The next review theme will be posted up tomorrow (Saturday) and I’m still open for some more guest reviews from fellow Canadians! Also a heads up to those going to Anime North this weekend; have fun! I look forward to reading your blogs and journals on the event (and help me plan my own trip for when money allows ;p ).

By now I’m sure everyone’s heard of atleast one incident involving students writing names in Death Notes, and the reactions of people when they’re discovered. This of course spawns from the series Death Note, where writing a name in such a book would lead to that person’s death.

I was reading another news article today about just such an incident when one paragraph inparticular caught my attention:

“Kids can buy their own “Death Note,” complete with material from the movie and a set of blank pages to list their own potential targets. It’s listed for $15.95 at www.amazon.com.”

I had never thought of these imitation Death Notes as that before and that’s why this really stood out to me. I even own a Death Note of my own but I’d never considered writing names in it. I look at it more like a neat prop (I’m a big fan of replica merchandise) and I know it’s a popular cosplay item.

I’m not saying it surprises me that people write names in it, not at all, but it really made me think about how people percieve the item itself. Is that the intention of these sold Death Notes? Is it what people would assume they’re for? For those outside the culture, I can certainly see why but reading it was a bit of an eye-opener none the less.

DramaQueen Comeback Updates

By now I’m sure most have heard about DramaQueen‘s apparent preparations for a come back, publisized highly in an article by Publishers Weekly. Quick recap, it’s been a loooong time since DQ has released any of their books, leaving many worried that they were going under or dropping licenses.

Now with word of a comeback on the near horizon, DramaQueen has begun sending out cease and desists to scanlation groups for some of their licenses, such as the Tyrant Who Falls In Love.

Taisa, DQ’s representative on the DQ forums, has been doing the best she can to keep the curious informed while remaining under a non-disclosure agreement. She did have this to say recently though: “I’m not sure what the bosslady intends to do as far as announcements. But if she doesn’t say something by the end of May, then I’ll be sure to spill whatever beans I have to spill.”

Just a little more to let us know there does indeed seem to be something stirring over at DQ. Now we just need some release dates!

No More Heroes: Play Without Regrets

nomoreheroes_exam.jpg

While I plan to write up a full review for this in due time, I’m taking a minute of this slow Saturday to plug one of the best games I’ve played in ages: No More Heroes for the Wii (nothing like you’ve ever played on the Wii, not for the kiddies!). You play as the main character Travis, a fan of anime and Mexican wrestling, on his way to becoming the top assassin. It’s a hilarious, beautiful stylized and over the top action game that makes great use of the Wiimote’s capabilities, taking the hack and slash action platform to a much more entertaining level. Extra recommendations if you like a challenge; this game has some of the toughest bosses I’ve ever faced in a video game. It’s also a bit of a parody, poking fun at the game genre stereotypes with both plot, dialouge delivery and in-game play actions. Much more shortly put: I loved it and cannot recommned it enough for a good time (and finally an anime fan representation whose really awesome, once you get past the 27 year old virgin part).

And completely unrelated but added for my purely anime/manga visiting fans: Amazon has a new listing for an exclusive complete Inu-Yasha series set, $419.99 f0r 3900 minutes of Shikon searching action. Glad I’m not really a fan. I have trouble enough getting past $70 boxsets! Ouch. Good for those who’ve been waiting to get it all in one go though I suppose.

Fellow Blogging Females Come Forward

Gia posted a link today over to a fun sounding little get-together of female bloggers. Its aim is to get a collection of girls who run anime/manga related blogs to sign up, then respond to issues and topics voted for by the group. They word it much better than I possibly could (as I make this last minute post before running out the door) so go check it out for yourself. I and a bunch of others have already slapped our names up for participation so it should make for an interesting endeavour!

Summer Review Time!

This is a little heads up post about some current and upcoming stuff happening with Kuriousity manga reviews! First of all, I went back today and added where I got all the books I’ve reviewed so far, including online sources, comic shops and directly from publishers. I’ll be including that information on all future reviews. Second thing, I’ll be moving to a more casual review writing style, such as use of the words, ‘I’ and ‘my’, for one. Some claim profressional suicide. I disagree. I want my reviews to be objective but still a bit personal. My opinions afterall. I’m curious about others’; thoughts anyone?

Now for some future stuff: there’s been some talk on various sites about more reviews for older series, perfect timing for my upcoming summer manga review project! I’m all up for reviewing older series, showcasing some classics, and perhaps hidden gems, of the hundreds of titles out there. Throughout the summer I’ll be having themed weeks: each week a new theme and five reviews related to it. I’ll be focusing on older manga releases that are still available for purchase. There will also be some guest reviews sprinkled in so expect some nice diversity in both genres and opinions!

On that note, if you’re a fellow Canadian and you’d like to see your manga reviews posted here on Kuriousity, send me an e-mail with an example! I’m looking for reviews on any genre of manga, positive or negative, it’s all what you think. Reviews should be written in similiar formats to those already posted here, with thought given to story, art and publisher, but past that, have fun with ’em!

Sunday Stuffers

Sunday Stuffers - Viz Manga

Random things that may be of interest to some people on this slow Sunday:

Dragonballmovieblog.net has posted an image of the first official look at Justin Chatwin in his role as Goku in the upcoming live action adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s Dragonball. Supposedly a scan from the next issue of Shonen Jump in Japan, it’ll no doubt be a picture we’ll be seeing pop up around the internet soon enough.

Having announced their licensing of the Code Geass mangas back when they acquired the anime, Bandai Entertainment has got a bunch of listings for the books up on Amazon.com.  Five books in five months, looks like Code Geass fans will definately be getting their fix in fairly rapid succession. Bandai Entertainment is also going through a big site revamp at this time with a blog to update visitors of their progress, media and general company happenings.

And finally, also over at Amazon.com, Viz sent the site some updated images for future releases (see pictures above), for any who want to see some pics.
