On the 10th Day of Christmas…

Tenth day of December anyway. Some random fun/entertaining/otherwise interesting links for you today :)

The new trailer for Fox’s upcoming Dragonball adaptation, now titled Dragonball Evolution, is currently up and ready for viewing! My thoughts remain generally the same as before, obviously not a faithful adaptation but still looks like fun! In fact, I think now it looks even more fun. Go check it out and see what you think.

AnimeNewsNetwork has the first of its free streaming anime up for viewing now! No complaints about free, legal anime :) Currently you can watch Kite: Liberator, Girl’s High and Ramen Fighter Miki.

Also ANN related: Their annual Holiday Logo Contest has begun! Momentary ANN-fame and anime boxsets await the winner. I’m entering the contest in the slim hope I could get my hands on the CLAMP School Detectives boxset! Going to be fun to see all the cute submitted artwork starring their AnimeNewsNina mascot when the entries are displayed.

And a little late on the update, but for those (like me) who’ve missed Gia‘s site updates, you can now rejoice at her return on her website, AnimeVice. Extra goodies include some video updates such as fun look at the inside of Viz Media’s office. Envious of their working space? I think so.

And lastly, for the yaoi fans, Yaoi Generation has preview pages up for its first release, Breath by Chifumi Ochi. So if you’d like to take a look, then by all means! I recommend viewing the images in full size since the preview window shrinks them down and makes ’em fuzzy.

Review: Sighing Kiss

Manga-ka: Riyu Yamakami
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: October 2008

Synopsis: “Clumsy Akira is head-over-heels for his best friend, the confident and handsome Takuya. Too bad Tatsuya has a gorgeous girlfriend… and no idea that Akira watches his every move! When the strange and sarcastic Tanabe steps in to distract (and tease) his lovesick pal, Akira’s sure he’s just looking for a little excitement to pass the time. However, it becomes impossible to ignore how well Tanade seems to know his thoughts, wishes and deepest secrets…”

Sighing Kiss was a book that fell victim to first impressions with me. The fluffy though rather dull looking cover had me slipping this book to the lower section of my to-read pile, and even after unwrapping, the interior art left me just as underwhelmed. But always one to enjoy being proven wrong, Sighing Kiss ended up being much more than my initial thoughts gave it credit for and I’m all the happier for it.

Whore of Turfan Premieres

A new webcomic by Tina Anderson and a very good friend of mine, MTCopyright, has premiered as of Friday. It’s called Whore of Turfan, a story of Russians and Mongols that has a lot of time, research and passion behind its creation. You can read page one of it on the site now and a new page will be posted every week. I highly recommend checking it out, especially the bios for a start which sport nice artwork and background information about each character that works up to the beginning of the tale. Warning: Site and comic contains mature content not suitable for minors.

Review: Tomorrow’s Ulterior Motive

Manga-ka: Sakuya Fujii
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: Septmeber

Synopsis: “Mentoring the beginning actor Makoto Aizawa is the famed screenwriter and producer Sanari Jonouchi. His lessons are very simple. Have sex so that you forget your ego and let out the best sounds possible! Lately, as Makoto has started to shine in a spotlight of his own, Sanari has been writing him into his scripts more and more. But a horrible scheme is creeping up on them. Ouchi, Sanari’s rival, has taken a liking to Makoto and is determined to tear the two lovebirds apart.”

Tomorrow’s Ulterior Motives is a sequel story to Sakuya’s Fujii’s previous manga, Today’s Ulterior Motives, which I haven’t read. In fact, it wasn’t until I had finished reading this manga and flipped it over to read the synopsis (something I generally do only after I’ve read a book), that I learned it had a predecessor. Unfortunately, it dispelled one of the few positive thoughts I had about this book: that the manga-ka made (so I thought) a good choice in skipping right to the point where the lead characters are already dating because there’s no way I could’ve handled reading anymore.

Artist: Rhea Silvan

Different past elements are drawn together in this fourth and final volume of Winter Demon. Fuyu takes Hakuin to a nearby healer when old wounds torment his weakened body. There the two meet the young doctor whose heart is at odds over his feelings for a demon named Ryuuto who has the power to heal but a dangerous sexual appetite. Review: Romantic Illusions

Manga-ka: Reiichi Hiiro
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: September 2008

Synopsis: “Yu: shy, part-time florist. Ryo: street-walking playboy. Kaname: cool-headed defense attorney. These three couldn’t be more different — except that they share the same body! After a childhood trauma, Yu created his multiple personalities so someone would love him. But when Yu falls in love with Sugo, Ryo and Kaname’s jealousy makes it nigh impossible for them to meet!”

When I picked up Romantic Illusions, I had just finished a volume 2-6 mini-marathon of MPD Psycho. Could I possibly handle reading another multiple personality book right now? Yes, yes I could, and not only did I read it, but I loved every minute of it.

Review: You Make My Head Spin!

Manga-ka: Kazuhiko Mishima
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: September 2008

Synopsis: “Shindo has just transferred into an extremely individualistic school. The ideal honor student, Shindo appears to sparkle with his perfect poise and presence. Yosuke, on the other hand, is the school delinquent preferring to spend his time hanging out on the school roof. But, Yosuke has a dark secret. The stereotypical tsundere, he may appear hostile on the outside, but his gruff hides a very sensitive interior. An interior that Shindo is determined to uncover…”

The story begins with a new student’s first day at his new school. In sharp contrast to the rundown looking building, Shindou is tidy and serious. The school is overrun by delinquents, or atleast that’s what said, but it goes without saying that when Shindou meets the hair-dyed, foul-mouthed, Yousuke, there’s more than a little contrast going on.
