Swag Bag: All The RightStuf With BL, Kai and Viz

Canada Post recently announcing their rotating strike was already bad news on its own but I was doubly cranky about it as my box of RightStuf goodies was presumably trapped somewhere between here and there. Luck was on my side though and on the morning the strike was set to start, my box arrived!

Replica (Vol. 01)Taking advantage of their Digital Manga sale a little while back, I picked up a bunch of my must-have titles at prices I couldn’t possibly refuse! Paying their sale price on the US price, and the Canadian dollar as it is, I got each book for 50% off what I would’ve paid here.

Continuing current series, I bought Target in the Finder (Vol. 03), Kizuna Omnibus (Vol. 02) and Tyrant Who Falls In Love (Vol. 02). Now that I’ve got a couple volmes of Kizuna and Finder, it’s time to retire my BeBeautiful version to the storage bins. I also purchased Replica (Vol. 01) and Countdown 7 Days (Vol. 01). Both are shonen (I think?) series that I was able to get an early preview of from Digital Manga. I really liked them both and hope they still get a chance to impress people despite being hidden within DM’s big boys’ love library.

Back to the boys’ love, I got one of BLU’s final publications: Crimson Snow. It’s a one-shot title that I’ve been dying to have in my hand since I saw the gorgeous cover on Amazon last year. Learning the plot only furthered my want so it was the first to have its plastic covering ripped off. I also picked up the last two volumes of breath – a five volume BL series by the so far one-series company Yaoi Generation who’s been disappointedly quiet since last year.

Crimson SnowAnd because a RightStuf purchase isn’t complete without some anime, I happily took advantage of the Funimation sale to buy Dragonball Z Kai Parts 2-4 and the second half of the series Welcome to the NHK.

Buying back on more local soil, I visited our big bookstore Chapters as the customary before-and-after seeing a movie ritual (aka, it’s right next door to the biggest theatre). Last week I was thrilled to get a copy of A Bride’s Story from Yen Press. It’s a really gorgeous book and you’ll want to spend some time oogling the hard cover design before  you even crack it open.

This upcoming week is Viz Media‘s huge shipping list, which generally always happens the first week of the month. This often means a big armful of books for me and this month was no exception, especially with some of my absolute favourites out. Books carried to the check-out included Pokemon Adventures (Vol. 13), Bleach (Vol. 35), Blue Excorcist (Vol. 02) and Toriko (Vol. 05). I also bought Full Metal Alchemist 3-in-1 (Vol. 01) because of a friends’ recommendation. To try and round out the shonen just a little, I also bought Grand Guignol Orchestra (Vol. 03) – battling doll-like zombies with music while wearing Victorian gothic attire!

Thankfully I just finished a big Spring cleaning revamp of my manga bookshelves (which of course included adding a new one), so there’s plenty of space to start adding in my new goodies. That said, I’ll be selling a couple boxes full at this upcoming Animaritime so East Coast Canadians have another reason to come enjoy the event ;)

So what was in your swag bag this week?

YaoiGen Holiday Sale Offers Savings on Shipping

YaoiGen Holiday Sale

Joining the other boys’ love publishers offering some spiffy deals this season, the semi-still-new-kid-on-the-block, Yaoi Generation, is offering cheap savings on shipping their books around the world. (via TheYaoiReview)

Until January 1st, all books shipped to Canada and the US will be free of shipping costs. Also for a select other number of countries, all books will be shipped at a flat-rate of $2/US. These countries are Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Currently the company has released volumes 1-4 of Chifumi Ochi’s breath, an enjoyable mature boys’ love read that I’d recommend to any fan of the genre. YaoiGen offers up quite a few deals throughout the year as well so certainly keep an eye out for future ones in 2010 and the first releases of their next series.

Review: breath (Vol. 02)

Reviewer: Lissa Pattillo

No listing currently available

Manga-ka: Chifumi Ochi
Publisher: Yaoi Generation
Rating: Mature (18+)
Release Date: May 2009

Synopsis: “Yanagi and Arata’s encounter started off as a simple pick-up at a bar, but Arata – who balks at homosexual sex – upsets Yangai to the point of being blackmailed into a sex-slave relationship. It is Arata’s charming and innocent personality, however, that breaks through Yanagai’s resolve and deeper feelings begin to form between them. Just then, Yanagi’s sex friend and Arata’s younger twin brother, Takashi, notices Arata’s strange behaviour…”

One old boyfriend, an inquisitive brother and a relationship that begins to teeter between romantic and purely physical are boys’ love staples awaiting readers in this second volume of breath. Yannagi, still laid back and ready to go, may seem more apt to push forward but a sharp blast from his past puts a damper on his enthusiasm and begins a renewal of old concerns, levelling out the proverbial playing field of emotion between him and Arata.

Yaoi Generation Adds Shinri Fuwa Titles

YaoiGen Adds Shinri Fuwa Titles

Recently launched boys’ love publisher, Yaoi Generation has announced two new licenses today: Shinri Fuwa’s Tendar Affairs (Yasashii Kankei), and its sequel series, Perfect World. Combined the two connected series are five volumes long.

Yaoi Generation gave out clues pertaining to these licenses on their forums not too long away:

“…they’re older multi-volume works from a mangaka whose work has been published in the US before. She’s known for drawing wonderful expressions. It’s a light yaoi.”

Shinri Fuwa’s work has previously been published by Digital Manga and BeBeautiful and one of their current projects is the Libre/Deux english-teaching project, Repeat After Me?. Shinri Fuwa’s two titles bring Yaoi Generation’s series list up to three, but they assure fans of their initial release, breath, that it remains their top priority.

Yaoi Minis for January 24th

Always lots of yaoi

Some boys’ love links of interest tonight:

BLU forums are pointing the way to Tokyopop’s site where you can view some preview pages for the upcoming and long-awaited fourth volume of Black Knight. Pretty artwork awaits you!

Some exciting news over at the Yaoi Generation forums where the staff had this to say:

“We’re also wrapping up a couple new licenses! Yay! We’ll be announcing it soon… well, soonish… hehe.. It’s not one of the suggested ones though. We’ve been working on getting these upcoming licenses since middle of last year, and it’s finally nearing completion, so we’re very excited!”

So much for waiting until the end of their first series, breath, before diving into others. But who am I kidding, I’m happy. Here’s hoping they handle it well and we get some more quality work. I was impressed with their first release and hope to be with future ones.

Deb Aoki’s Best of 2008 manga polls continue, including Best New Yaoi/Shonen-Ai Manga of 2008. It’s down to a race between the global boys’ love title ANIMA by Dany&Dany, and Ayano Yamane’s A Foreign Love Affair. Personally, I voted for Future Lovers, no contest my favourite on the list. Head over there and vote for your favorite and definitely check out any titles there you haven’t read yet. There’s some good ones for sure!

A new title from Kitty Media? Sense and Sexuality, with a release date listed for April 2009 (Edit: update). And how about a potentially new title from Deux Press? Have some Spicy But Sweet, a sequel to their already licensed Naughty But Nice. And from DMP, The Lonely Mgoytist (this one seems familiar to me but I can’t find news on it before my head hits the desk from sleepiness so apologies if this is repeat news).

Y!Gallery, aka YaoiGallery, the biggest online art community revolving around men, men and men on men, has recently had a big overhaul of their Rules and Terms of Use. One of the biggest changes includes the return of ‘furries’. Characters with strong animal characteristics were originally banned due to user complaints and a blurred line of beastiality. Site users are now given the option to filter their accounts so that furry art doesn’t show up for them. Other rule changes include no copyrighted material or work taken without permission being used for literature thumbnails (saving people like me a hundred headaches for clicking on what looks like really well done fanart only to find one of a million fanfics).

And finally, Tina Anderson and MTCopyright’s full-colour webcomic Whore of Turfan continues to update weekly with lots of shiny drama to look forward to every Friday! (Whoops, how’d this plug get here? ;) ) Seriously though, a strong start for the series from two talented individuals and I can’t wait to see where its going.

Review: breath (Vol. 01)

Manga-ka: Chifumi Ochi
Publisher: Yaoi Generation
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: December 2008

Synopsis: “Stopping by his favorite bar in Tokyo’s gay district, Yanagi picks up an attractive man, and the two spend a passionate night together. The next morning, however, the stranger proclaims that what they did makes him sick and then bolts from the room. With the weight of confusion and frustration crushing him, Yanagi thinks he’ll never see the man again… until he finds out it’s his good friend’s twin brother, Arata. Even when confronted, Arata refuses to accept what happened that drunken night, so an angry Yanagi comes up with a plan to make Arata his sex slave as punishment… “

Marking the first book released by the fledging, Yaoi Generation, the story of breath begins in a pretty straight-forward manner. Guy goes to bar to find a date for the night, meets an attractive man, takes him to a hotel, gives him a night of pleasure he’ll never forget… and is then is bombarded with insults, slurs and regretful exclamations the following morning. Now what’s a guy to do?

Another lame title joke brought to you by Kuriousity aside, a quick note tonight to spread the news of a recent Yaoi Generation press release. The release date for the first volume of their licensed series, breath, is December 16th, with pre-orders available at their online store on November 28th. Both the store and the site’s forums are set to open that day at the stroke of midnight! Well… one minute after anyway.

YG on Friday and DQ on Saturday. Going to be a weekend of boys’ love expectations it seems. Could we possibly have a weekend of both birth and resurrection on our BL buying hands?

More on the Newly Born YG

Yaoi Generation

Over at her blog, Gia’s posted a short Q&A she had with Thuy Duong, president of the industry’s newest boys’ love publisher, Yaoi Generation. The questions address a variety of things, including their first announced title, breath, to the possibility of future licenses. I was especially happy to read Thuy Duong’s confirmation about their considerations for publishing global boys’ love work. I know a couple “artists and writers who took the initiative” and I’m happy to know their efforts could bear some fruit. I’m really looking forward to a publisher who looks to balance both, so it’ll be interesting to see where things head from here. Only two months until we see the first book!

Yaoi Generation Makes Its Debut

breath by Chifumi Ochi

I may not be able to attend Yaoi Con, but the wonders of the internet allows us to keep informed all the same! So yay for that :)

Today I recieved an e-mail from Yaoi Generation about their first licensed title:

“breath, by Chifumi Ochi, is a five-volume love story between a socially awkward businessman and a confident, attractive college student. Brought together by too much alcohol and a series of misunderstandings, these two opposites face difficult trials while learning just how much they need each other.”

The series is five volumes long with the first book set for release in December. Not too long a wait! I’m excited to see what their publishing will be like, plus marketing from here on out.

Yaoi Generation has also updated their website, including this information and some cover images (pictured above) from the announced book. They also remind fans to drop by their booth at Yaoi Con for the news and some goodies!

You can read the full press release with some words from the company’s president, Thuy Duong, under the cut.

If I Was Down in San Francisco This Weekend

Celebrating Male Beauty and Passion, hmm?

The schedule for Yaoi Con 2008 was posted yesterday night. Coming up this weekend, September 26-28th, it’s the biggest (I would assume by this point?) boys’ love event on this continent. Alas, the cost of flights, hotels and passports keep me from it. And yet I couldn’t help looking at the schedule and planning my ‘if I was there’. Live the experience for me, Yaoi Con attendees!
