Review: Incubus (Vol. 03)

Author/Artist: Yayoi Neko
Publisher: Kitty Media
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: October 2008

Synopsis:
“Can a demon find love on Earth? The painful relationship between the demon Lenniel and the human Judas continues all the odds stacked against them. They will endure tribulations as pressures from Hell and Earth seek to split them apart. How can they overcome such epic obstacles?”

Despite the book’s back cover synopsis, the relationship between Lenniel and Judas doesn’t carry much focus in this third volume of Incubus, nor (much to Lenniel’s dismay) does it really exist. But romance and tribulations can be found in the bodies and souls of another trialed couple, the return of the demon Kent and his injured human lover, Alexi. After an accident left him comatose, Kent stays at Alexi’s side with hope of a recovery but what he doesn’t know is that Alexi is fighting his own internal battle against the man who put him in the coma in the first place.

Review: The Moon and the Sandals (Vol. 02)

Manga-ka: Fumi Yoshinaga
Publisher: DMP
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: June 2007

Synopsis: “The loveable characters of The Moon and The Sandals saga begin a new chapter in their lives. Kobayashi and Toyo have both successfully started their careers, Hashizume now heads his own restaurant and Rikuko is studying to be a doctor. But amidst all this seeming success, old issues still lurk below the surface, waiting to be resolved. Question is… will the gang be able to muster enough maturity to finally settle old scores?”

The story continues as we follow the two couples established in the first volume. Older lovers, Hashizume and Rikuko continue to live together as married men (or the closest thing to), while the younger couple Kobayashi and Toyo’s relationship continues to be a little bumpy but they’re no less in love. The two couples may have found soul mates in each other, but of course that doesn’t mean they’re perfect!

Review: Can’t Win With You! (Vol. 03)

Author: Satosumi Takaguchi
Manga-ka: Yukine Honami
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: March 2008

Synopsis: “Shuuiku Academy’s students are leaving for summer vacation, but Yuuhi-kun is stuck in the dorm. It doesn’t matter that home lies on the same backwoods country property as the school campus – his house is being remodeled, so Yuuhi’s got nowhere else to go! Likewise, Sango-san will be staying behind to keep an eye on things, leaving the two of them all alone with nothing but time on their hands. Will being away from prying eyes lead Sango to temptation?”

It’s the third and final volume of Can’t Win With You!, an undeniably charming and coming-of-age sort of book about a group of guys and their school dorm escapades. The book’s lead focus is on Yuuhi (or ‘Chickenhead’), a naïve but spirited boy from the country who happens to be the landlord of the school as well as the dorm’s Resident Advisor. He’s come quite a ways since the days of volume one with help, for better or worse, from the interesting group of acquaintances he’s made here in Shuuiku Academy.

More on the Newly Born YG

Yaoi Generation

Over at her blog, Gia’s posted a short Q&A she had with Thuy Duong, president of the industry’s newest boys’ love publisher, Yaoi Generation. The questions address a variety of things, including their first announced title, breath, to the possibility of future licenses. I was especially happy to read Thuy Duong’s confirmation about their considerations for publishing global boys’ love work. I know a couple “artists and writers who took the initiative” and I’m happy to know their efforts could bear some fruit. I’m really looking forward to a publisher who looks to balance both, so it’ll be interesting to see where things head from here. Only two months until we see the first book!

Go!Comi Yaoi Con Licenses and 07-Ghost

Get the Moon & BrandollI’m a little late on the draw with posting this news but doesn’t hurt to toss it out there anyway, right? Good stuff!

Go!Comi sent out a press release regarding two boys’ love licenses they announced at the past Yaoi Con 2008. The titles are Get the Moon and Brandoll, both by Ryo Takagi whose manga, The Devil Within, has already been released by Go!Comi.

“Get the Moon” tells the story of Getto, and his complex relationship with Moon – a handsome android created by his father! Getto’s sibling rivalry with Moon is inflamed by the fact that his father clearly prefers his android creation over his human one. As Getto and Moon fight for their “father’s” approval, will their relationship turn to hate – or love?

“Bran Doll” details the misadventures of the hapless Fen, who signs up for his country’s Special Defense Force, only to find himself enrolled in the Special DOLL Force instead! Now Fen must hunt down and retrieve a collection of precious, missing bran dolls (that’s right – bran dolls, the kind they use in voodoo) that have been scattered to the four corners of the world. Unfortunately for Fen (but fortunately for the reader) he has four beautiful men to accompany him on his quests!

Go!Comi’s website for their series 07-Ghost, is also up and running now. To celebrate the site’s launch, and the upcoming release of volume one, they’ve started a draw-contest with the winner recieving the original seven book set of the 07-Ghost tankobon.

It’s more of what readers’ve come to expect from Tokiya Shimazaki as the semes of the story just cannot get enough loving from their respective bottoms. Review: Manic Love

Manga-ka: Satomi Yamaguchi
Publisher: DMP/June
Rating: Mature (18+)
Released: September 2007

Synopsis: “During the summer of his second year in high school, Maki Sonoda found love for the first time in the arms of his cram school teacher, Haruji Shirai. But, things become complicated when Maki realizes that Haruji is really in love with high school teacher Mr. Mizuguchi. Manic Love is a prequel, of sorts, to Satomi Yamagata’s Fake Fur (also released by DMP). The stories follow Maki, introduced to readers in Fake Fur as the young boy living in a stranger’s apartment. Here in Manic Love, we follow Maki into his blossoming world of sex and love as he deals with both for the first time.
