JuneManga.com Recieves Its Overhaul

June's May Makeover

Following behind the Digital Manga conglomerate site, DMP Books and the recently revamped eManga.com, the next website revamp on the Digital Manga train is their original yaoi line-up headquarters, June Manga.

Along with a shiny new May-makeover layout, with much improvement navigation and easier on the eyes graphics, comes the following features that connects this site to those previously updated before:

  • Better search capabilities so you can easily find the titles you’re interested in
  • Sample pages for all of our published titles and YouTube previews for select titles
  • A regularly updated release schedule so you can keep track of what’s coming
  • A new blog that’s integrated with the rest of the Digital Manga website
  • A new integrated forum system that fixes several problems with our old forum

As with DMPBooks, the new layout change to June Manga also brings with it the new look June books will soon be sporting. My comments on the new look would sound like a repeat of what I had to say about DMP’s change, so I’ll save further opinion until I hold the first new book in my hands. Thumbs up to the look of the soon-to-be-released Ludwig II, however. Looking forward to that one for sure!

You can read the full press release under the cut.

Love Syndrome One of More DM Disappearances?, More Yellow

Where Have We Gone?

Internet-splunkage today stumbled me upon a post from user saaria on the AarinFantasy forums, that states Digital Manga has confirmed the cancellation of Yura Miyazawa’s Love Syndrome. Amazon has the book marked for a May 2009 release but the title is not present on Digital Manga’s website.

I shot out an e-mail to Digital Manga for confirmation on this, but in the meantime took to looking if there may be other unknown casualities.

Mini Review: Awaken Forest

Awaken Forest – Yuna Aoi
Published by June (DMP)

A warning to readers looking for romance and fluff: you won’t find it here in this collection of short stories. Any attempts at it was superficial at best, a light coat of sugar overtop much darker themes, including incest, rape and violent bullying. Those stories that did end with a semblance of romantic joy were the least likeable in the whole batch, in full because they didn’t feel justified or believable.

The first story was the most notable example of this, where the age-old ‘love at first sight’ excuse is used to have two men fall incomprehensively in love with one another. The obstacle, if you would call him that, in their way is a younger brother who treats his elder sibling as a slave in retribution for a past injury. The story was surprisingly dark and twisted for something I went into expecting the usual boys’ love romance, and admittedly I found that made for an engaging read as the issues formed between the brothers made up the bulk of the story’s attention. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for the relationship haphazardly formed between the two leads, which was laughable at best, and thrown in for good-yaoi-measure in the end.

With following stories of sadistic bullies and abusive masters, it’s a bit hard to see why Digital Manga would pick up such a title and slide it into their June imprint, which (though with a few exceptions) is more the romantic or comedic variety of boys’ love. While some readers may find the content of Awaken Forest unsettling, for those who can stomach it, they do prove the real spark to the chapters.

If only the half-hearted attempts at romance, bad by even stereotypical boys’ love standards, weren’t there to spoil what otherwise could’ve been a darkly satisfying read of twisted psyches. An engaging read for those looking for some harsher content, and willing to put up with its slogging romances, but a definitive no for those looking for light-hearted material who would likely be offset by the abusive nature of the stories.

Flood Makes Mush of Yaoi Press Stock, KOSEN Cards for Auction

KOSEN Yaoi Press Cards

Prior to their appearance at the recently held, Animeland Vegas, Yaoi Press was struck with some bad luck when a flood at a storage facility made a mess of a portion of their books waiting to be sold. Over one hundred Yaoi Press books were left unsellable.

To make up some of the loss, Yaoi Press is now offering several complete decks of their KOSEN card sets up for auction on eBay. While you can currently obtain these cards as multiple-piece bonuses through their online store, EverythingYaoi.com, these auctions allow you ownership of the entire deck all in one go, plus the money goes to a good cause.

It quickly becomes clear that Chiga’s major vice-president duty will be to keep Kokusai out of harm’s way, but is he up to the task? AmazonFail, Amazon.com Discriminates Against GLBT Content

AmazonFail

Image from Bill Thompson (via GGYMeta)

For those of you who missed this fast-spread news over Easter Weekend, Amazon.com is being targeted for discrimination. Adult content, with particular emphasis on homosexual titles, began disappearing from Amazon’s search results and individual listings have had their Sales Rank (how well they’re selling comparatively on the site) removed.

My exploration of the issue and more information, including what you can do about it, can be read under the cut:

Released: March 2008

Synopsis: “Though Katsuya only spent one summer with brothers Kazuki and Shio, the impression that the beautiful Shio left was one that would last a lifetime. Mini Review: Black Knight (Vol. 04)

Black Knight (Vol. 04) – Kai Tsurugi
Published by BLU

Sometimes I wonder why I keep reading this series. Black Knight at this point is more political period-drama than a boys’ love story, and with the exception of a handful of the lead characters, I can’t tell who’s-who well enough due to similar character designs to even understand that much of the story.

Thankfully when the story steps back from the who-done-its, the characters themselves are still likeable with often the background crowds proving the most entertaining (as evident by some amusing mini-strips at the end). Christian, the youngest Prince of the Aran royal family, is currently in the neighbouring country of Dunhalk, the same country said to have tried to assassinate his Father. Far from being on vacation however, Chris is being held as a voluntary hostage to Dunhalk’s second Prince in a bid to create peace between their two countries. At his side is the ever-vigilante, Zeke, his bodyguard and secret-lover who still remains injured from a fight taking place in the previous volume.

While the boys’ love is at an all-time low in this one, fans have some overzealous royals, incestuous brothers and foreboding political plots to look forward to. The book’s last third takes a break from the main storyline and enjoyably takes us back in time to see Zeke in his youth, easily my favourite part of this book along with more of the gorgeous period clothing and detailed background settings that I’ve come to love since volume one.

While I do occasionally find Black Knight a little on the dull side thanks to some plot that falls just short of catching my interest, there’s successfully been enough focus on characters to keep me reading with eye-candy present to fill in any gaps. With the main plot steering for some choppy waters, I’m looking forward to reading how Christian and Zeke will make it through what the royal world has in store for them.
