MAGI is here! I’ve been eager to read this manga ever since I started watching the anime adaptation on Crunchyroll. I really love the characters, and hope the manga is as much fun. I’m still in shock it’s by the creator of Sumomomo, Momomo though. If curious, you can read Andre’s review of Sumomomo (Vol. 02).

Happy Birthday to me! Well, belated. Sort of. This week’s shipping day, August 7th, just so happened to be my birthday, and what a birthday it was! This week was a huge one for new manga – thanks predominantly to Viz Media – and among the spoils were some of my favourite series still running.

Notables for me included Toriko (Vol. 17), the final volume of Bakuman, A Devil and Her Love Song (Vol. 10), Kamisama Kiss (Vol. 13) and the very long awaited Kaze Hikaru (Vol. 21), a title that only comes out once a year! Plenty to choose from. Seek, read and enjoy~

Our snow here was short-lived, two feet of beautiful white fluff now little more than some crusty banks after a night of rain. It was rather disappointing! On the other hand, it means there’s nothing but some distance between me and new comics.

Year In Review: The Kuriousity of 2012

Here we are in the first week of 2013. We survived 2012! A lot of the past year is a blur in my mind, a flurry of up and down personal trials and an ever changing manga industry that makes a lot of the events of the past twelve months mesh together. Where does it begin and end!?

Thank goodness for Kuriousity to give me some grounded events and dates with which to look back on. That said, it’s time for a brief look back at Kuriousity in 2012!

Vertical Inc Heads to Space With Knights of Sidonia in 2013

Vertical Inc. has a fresh new license to kick off their convention season with Tsutomu Nihei’s Knights of Sidonia. The title first came to my attention when a listing for volume one popped up on Amazon (US). Vertical’s marketing director, Ed Chavez, has since confirmed the license with me so anticipate without question, readers! The first volume is currently scheduled for February 2013 at a price of $13.95/CAN and $12.95/US.

Knights of Sidonia is a science fiction story taking place thousands of years in the future where our solar system has been destroyed by an alien race. Surviving humans have taken to the stars and traverse the endless sea in giant ships as they work to reseed the universe with human life. The lead character is a young man drafted to pilot a mecha in order to defend the human race from the aliens who continue to hunt them.

The series’ creator, Tsutomu Nihei, has had a couple other works released in English already, including notably Blame! (Tokypop) and Biomega (Viz Media).

You can read a bit more detail about the plot on the Knights of Sidonia Wikipedia page, which also quotes the series as having “human cloning, asexual reproduction and human engineering such as controlled hybrid human/animal mutations and human photosynthesis”. Certainly sounds interesting to me!

Other February 2013 releases by Vertical Inc include paperback editions of two Osamu Tezuka titles – Ayako and The Book of Human Insects. Both were previously released in hardcover format.
