Viz Media Visits Jojo’s First Bizarre Adventures with Phantom Blood

Viz Media Visits Jojo's First Bizarre Adventures with Phantom Blood

Like many a viewer, I’ve recently been enjoying the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure anime on Crunchyroll. Dark, twisted, and never more funny than when it’s trying not to be!  Viz Media has released a number of Jojo volumes in English, but has never published the initial arc that this anime is based upon. It was tidy timing then that they made their recent license announcement:

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures: Phantom Blood – Hirohiko Araki

AnimeNewsNetwork confirmed this acquisition after a listing for the title was found on Amazon. The listings have since been removed, but showed a price point of $22.99/CAN | $19.99/US, and scheduled for release in February 2015.

“The legendary Shonen Jump series, now available in English for the first time, in a deluxe edition featuring color pages and newly drawn cover art!”

The price is the same as Viz Media’s 3-in-1 editions of Neon Genesis Evangelion, suggesting that as a deluxe edition this will likely also be multi-volume in length and with a larger trim size.

The last print volume of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure was released back in 2010. Hirohiko Araki’s one-shot manga, Rohan at the Louvre, was released more recently in 2012. Viz Media said they’d have more information about the Jojo franchise at their upcoming panel at Anime Expo.

Yen Press Collects Haruhi Anthologies for October Omnibus

Yen Press Collects Haruhi Anthologies for October Omnibus

Yen Press isn’t letting their Haruhi Suzumiya library gather any dust as they catch up with the release of its main series by year’s end. The publisher will be releasing a hefty collection of Haruhi stories later this year:

The Celebration of Haruhi Suzumiya – Various Creators

This omnibus collects three different anthologies of stories starring the characters of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Yen Press previously released an anthology like these ones on its own, The Misfortune of Kyon & Koizumi, which I read, enjoyed and reviewed last year.

These three Haruhi anthologies have stories from a bunch of different artists and writers, making them a fun read for the diversity of content. This omnibus collection clocks in at 528 pages and will be released in October. The book will cost $29.00/CAN, $26.00/US, and can be pre-ordered now from Amazon.ca or Amazon.com.

Kodansha Comics Plans Colossal Attack on Titan Omnibus

Colossal Attack on Titan Omnibus

Amidst some licensing news today, Kodansha Comics announced a repackaging of their bestselling series, Attack on Titan.

Scheduled for the end of May, this “colossal” edition will contain volumes one to five of Attack on Titan. That’s five volumes in one book, clocking in at a little over 1000 pages. Wow.

The book is being printed on “premium-quality paper”. This instills some faith the paper won’t be the flimsy, thin stuff we’re accustomed to in other omnibus editions – such as Viz Media’s VizBIG’s – and also gives further indication to just how massive this book will be. On top of that is news the book will be 7″ x 10.5″ – quite a bit larger than the original books, which are approximately 5″ x 7″.

PR: Spiral Into Madness With Deluxe Complete Edition of UZUMAKI from VIZ Media!

VIZ MEDIA RELEASES A DELUXE, HARDCOVER OMNIBUS EDITION OF JUNJI ITO’S CELEBRATED HORROR MANGA UZUMAKI

An Isolated Seaside Town Spirals Into Madness As A Mysterious Infestation Grows

San Francisco, CA, October 17, 2013 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, has announced the release of the UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition. The new 3-in-1 hardcover version of creator Junji Ito’s inventive horror manga (graphic novel) about the gradual decent into madness of a seaside town overrun with spirals features a new cover design as well as 12 pages of new full-color interior artwork.

The UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition, now available is published under the VIZ Signature imprint, is rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens, and carries an MSRP of $27.99 U.S. / $32.00 CAN.

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people’s bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi’s father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurozu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!

“Junji Ito takes one of the most ubiquitous designs found in nature, the spiral, and uses it as the foundation for a truly terrifying story,” says Masumi Washington, Senior Editorial Director. “This beautiful new hardcover UZUMAKI Deluxe Edition is a wonderful showcase for Ito’s unique, eye-catching art style and also makes a fun and frightening addition to this year’s Halloween season. Readers will never look at the world around them in the same way ever again after reading this masterpiece from one of the most acclaimed creators of horror manga!”

Review: The Betrayal Knows My Name (Vol. 05)

The Betrayal Knows My Name (Vol. 05)

Manga-ka: Hotaru Odagiri
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Release Date: February 2013

Synopsis: “Though the Zweilt are together at last, the calm before the inevitable storm of battle lingers. With no sign of activity from the camp of their sworn enemy, Reiga, Yuki and his allies are beguiled into a sense of peace. But even the distraction provided by a retreat to the Hidden Springs of the Giou to rest weary hearts and souls will not prepare Yuki for Sairi’s revelations about the brave but terrible end met by the Light of God through the ages…And when Takashiro is called in to investigate a pair of suspicious deaths, the winds of war begin to pick up in a frenzy…”

In the beginning The Betrayal Knows My Name was a shojo action manga with the occasional fan service scene. It’s since become a shojo manga with lots of fan service and the occasional action scene. The series has always coasted by on its pretty art, but with this volume it feels even more vacuous than ever.
