Viz Media Rescues Deadman Wonderland, Licenses Gangsta and Revives Old Fan-Favourites

Viz Media Rescues Deadman Wonderland, Licenses GANGSTA

Anime Expo had a bunch of great announcements from manga publishers last week, and I swear I’ll be caught up with them eventually! Viz Media had its panel on Sunday and pleased audiences with two new licenses:

Deadman Wonderland – Kazuma Kondou/Jinsei Kataoka
Gangsta – Kohske

Many manga readers probably recognize Deadman Wonderland as a Tokyopop title. Before shutting down, Tokyopop had released five volumes of the series. Viz Media will be beginning with their new, re-translated edition at volume one starting in February 2014. The volumes will sell for the standard Viz Media book price of $9.99/US, $12.99/CAN

I’m looking forward to getting to finish Deadman Wonderland, which I had mixed feelings about. The story follows a boy named Ganta who is locked up in a prison known as Deadman Wonderland after he’s framed for killing his classmates. There he must learn to survive through organized death matches against fellow inmates.

Gangsta is a series new to English publication. I’m not familiar with it, but a simple Google image search and a look at those cover images was all I needed to be excited. The artwork looks amazing. The story follows two men who take on an assortment of jobs from both gangs and the police in their city.

Viz Media will begin releasing Gangsta in February as well, but this title will be released at the slightly higher price point of $12.99/US, $14.99/CAN. This matches the price of other ‘premium’ series such as Dorohedoro and Dogs, so I’m hopeful that means Gangsta will get the same large trim treatment.

Ranma 1/2Other news from the panel included confirmation the Shonen Jump series, Nisekoi, would be released in print starting in January, as well as the new full-colour edition of Dragonball in February. The Dragonball volumes will be released in a size closer to North American graphic novels, which I think will suit the bright colours nicely. Both of these titles have been running chapter-by-chapter in the digital edition of Shonen Jump.

Viz Media is also re-releasing Ranma 1/2, offering the title as 2-in-1 omnibus editions released in their original right-to-left reading orientation for the first time in English. Yay! These books will be $14.99/US, $16.99/CAN a volume and will begin publication in March.

Books, book, books. Make sure you don’t miss your second – and possibly last – chance to buy two of my favourite manga series, with Fullmetal Alchemist 3-in-1 (Vol. 05) and Tokyo Babylon Omnibus (Vol. 02). I’m really loving this new(ish) omnibus trend. They’re often worth every penny and then some~

Review: Higurashi When They Cry – Massacre Arc (Vol. 02)

Higurashi When They Cry – Massacre Arc (Vol. 02)

Author: Ryukishio7
Manga-ka: Hinase Momoyama
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Mature (18+)
Release Date: December 2012

Synopsis: “Keiichi’s appeals to the Child Consultation Center receive an outpouring of support from his classmates and teachers, but still the authorities refuse to intercede. Hinamizawa is a village controlled by three powerful families, and without the support of the Sonozakis-and their fearsome head, Oryou-the Center will not budge. As Keiichi struggles to convince Oryou, Rika feels her dream of living a happy life beyond the summer of 1983 begin to fade away. Does Keiichi have what it takes to make a miracle happen? Can Satoko be saved? Can Rika…?”

This volume of Higurashi only lightly indulges it’s supernatural-conspiracy side, pushing the more outlandish elements into a corner to make room for more worldly problems like child abuse and small town politics. It makes for a strange tone, as even though the weirdness level is low, the manga stays as intense as ever – it’s just instead of murders and massacres we get lots of scenes of people in meetings. The strange part is that the manga treats the two as if they are equally dramatic, giving this volume an unintentionally funny edge.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - April 17, 2013

It’s that time again! New manga day, a beautiful thing. Some may notice the absence of a couple Vertical and Kodansha Books on this week’s shipping list, which were sadly a bit late being sent out by distributors. Booooo! Never fear for they will arrive in time, and for now enjoy what Seven Seas and Viz Media has for us this week!

My thoughts on the new books can be read at the usual place – Otaku USA’s weekly On The Shelf article.

One Peace Licenses Black Bard and Smuggler for Winter Release

One Peace Licenses Black Bard and Smuggler for Winter Release

One Peace Books isn’t a company that comes to mind right away for most English manga readers. However this little company is continuing to grow and this past week had two fun license announcements that I think are a notable step in catching the attention of the more average manga reader:

Black Bard  – Ichiya Sazanami (Amazon CAN/US)
Smuggler – Shohei Manabe (Amazon CAN/US)

Listings for each title are already on Amazon, though pricing for the releases is still not available. The listings verify that both books will be released as single volumes, with Black Bard scheduled for October 2013 and Smuggler for December 2013.

Both these licenses are really interesting for One Peace Books. Smuggler was previously released by Tokyopop so this will be its second edition in North America. One Peace already has one other license ‘rescue’ under their belt with Crayon Shin-Chan, so at least this acquisition isn’t too much a surprise in that way.

“Ryosuke Kinuta is a struggling young actor with a mounting problem–his unpaid debts to loan sharks have caught up with him, so they cut a deal, offering him a different type of role. Ryosuke will work as their carrier, but unfortunately, this isn’t the big break he has been hoping for. He has to smuggle the bodies of murdered victims, making sure they’re never to be seen again…or he’ll never be seen again!” – Tokyopop

Black Bard on the other hand, which is a first-time in English release, is a lot more mainstream looking than I ever expected from One Peace. They’ve primarily released lesser known independent works such as Tenken and manga adaptations of classic literature. You can see a few preview pages of Black Bard on Amazon.jp. Based on the art style alone, I’m looking forward to this one quite a bit and the fact that it’s going to be a 3-in-1 collected edition of almost 600 pages makes it sound even more worthwhile.

Black Bard follows the journey of a young bard who, while travelling across a fantasy world, entrances those he meets with his unique singing voice and particular set of talents.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - February 27, 2013

It’s a Yen Press and Kodansha Comics week! My top picks of the books released yesterday are Until Death Do Us Part (Vol. 03), and – to my surprise- The Misfortune of Kyon & Koizumi. Those two were the only thing I really enjoyed about the Haruhi franchise, so reading a collection of shorts about them with some boys’ love jokes proved pretty entertaining.

You can read my thoughts on this week’s releases over at my weekly On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - February 13, 2013

Our snow here was short-lived, two feet of beautiful white fluff now little more than some crusty banks after a night of rain. It was rather disappointing! On the other hand, it means there’s nothing but some distance between me and new comics.

For my thoughts on the new manga out this week, you can check out my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Review: Higurashi When They Cry – Massacre Arc (Vol. 01)

Higurashi When They Cry - Massacre Arc (Vol. 01)

Author: Ryukishio07
Manga-ka: Hinase Momoyama
Publisher: Yen Press
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Release Date: September 2012

Synopsis: “The ‘Curse Killing Arc’…The ‘Time Killing Arc’…As each incarnation of the terrible events in Hinamizawa unfolds, Rika Furude must watch as her friends descend into madness and despair, knowing the only fate that awaits her is death. With the unique ability to see all of these worlds, Rika desperately searches for the common links between them that will help her stop the cycle and give her and her friends a happy future beyond June 1983. But with less than a month before the cotton drifting in her current life, will Rika be able to change destiny in time?”

Before now you could read the individual Higurashi arcs and still be able to understand well enough what was going on. With this volume, however, everything that has come before gels together and starts building towards a climax that brings all the previously unrelated events into one story. With the bigger scope comes bigger stakes. In the Massacre Arc it’s not just the lives of everyone in Hinamizawa that’s in danger but the very fabric of reality itself.

Girlfriends (Vol.02)! This second and final omnibus of the series from Seven Seas is my book pick of the week. I’m sad to have it over so soon, but incredibly grateful Girlfriends was licensed. Not many series can give me the feelings that one did (more yuri, please!), plus it was adapted by none other than Kuriousity’s Shannon Fay! My thanks to Seven Seas for the cute and touching experience.
