Viz Media Brings The Romance and Magic With Five New Licenses

Viz Media Brings The Romance and Magic With Five New Licenses

Leave it to the manga publishers to shower us with gifts during a period of time I’m having issues updating the website. What a world, right? Upside to recent site issues here at Kuriousity is that it should be working smoother and loading quicker now than before!

The inner workings of Kuriousity is not what drew you to this post though, that would be the five new manga licenses that Viz Media announced late last week:

Happy Marriage?! – Maki Enjouji
August 2013 ($9.99/US, $12.99/CAN), 18+

Magi – Shinobu Ohtaka
August 2013 ($9.99/US, $12.99/CAN)

Midnight Secretary – Tomu Ohmi Tomu
September 2013 ($9.99/US, $12.99/CAN), 18+

Sweet Rein – Sakura Tsukuba
November 2013 ($9.99/US, $12.99/CAN)

Voice Over – Maki Minami
October 2013 ($9.99/US, $12.99/CAN)

All of the titles are being published under Viz’s Shoujo Beat imprint, with the exception of Magi which will be an addition to their long-dormant, Shonen Sunday. I love how the release dates aren’t very far off either, so not too long to wait for what sound like some well worth waiting for titles!

PR: GEN Manga Announces the launch of new Korean Comics Magazine, GEN Manhwa!

GEN Manga Announces the launch of new Korean Comics Magazine, GEN Manhwa!

GEN Manhwa, featuring Stone Collector, is available nationwide Feb. 2013!

NEW YORK, NY – GEN Manga Entertainment, Inc. announces the release of GEN Manhwa (GEN Manhwa, featuring Stone Collector, 54 pages, black and white) will be available Feb. 2013.

GEN Manga welcomes 2013 with exciting new publishing plans! GEN Manga will release monthly indie Korean GEN Mahnwa!

“It’s a non-stop full of action title full of monsters and zombies! Very high grade stuff!”

Stone Collector: Pieces of curse fall from the sky as if to mock the cruelty and evil of humanity. These stones create wretched beasts and the blood of these beasts turn human flesh into the undead. There is only one thing that can destroy these hellish fiends—Jade Stone. This is the story of a Stone Collector. One who wields Jade forged blades. A man whose family was murdered by these evil abominations and he has now vowed to rid the world of the foul presence. —Author: Kevin Han —Artist: Zom-J

This year GEN will also release a complete list of graphic novels. All new graphic novels with all new content along with the return of old stories with new artwork and new chapters! GEN Manga will release new content every month, this time, in the form of one-shot graphic novels, otherwise known in Japan as tankobon!

The second release 2013 in GEN Manga’s publishing schedule is the indie fan favorite Sorako!

The art of Sorako is fluid, quick, imprecise. Lines aren’t perfectly straight nor details entirely accurate, but the rough drafting style gives the frames energy and character, enhancing the impression that the artist’s goal is to tell Sorako’s story, blemishes and all. —AnimeNation

Sorako lives an ordinary life. And this is an ordinary story. She has friends and family, loves her dog, thinks about life, and occasionally looks for work (kinda). These are the adventures into a typical girl’s life.

—Author & Artist: Takayuki Fujimura

GEN Manga will also release its first Kickstarter to help promote print here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1450575711/sorako-a-manga-about-nothing?ref=live

GEN stories are published nowhere else in the world. These stories are created by the elusive doujin creators in Tokyo’s secret underground circles, otherwise known in the west as independent creators and hard core fans.

Presenting new indie manga circles from Japan, GEN, a monthly publication, will be released in the US and Japan simultaneously. Digital format and print editions for GEN are available now. Based in New York, GEN Manga Entertainment (www.genmanga.com) endeavors to publish new and unseen graphic work from Japan, being in the unique position to bring readers work first, more original and untamed manga will be sure to come!

Centaurs, Succubi & Lamias – Seven Seas Licenses Three New Titles

Centaurs, Succubi & Lamias - Seven Seas Licenses Three New Titles

Seven Seas was one of several publishers who took February 14th as a sign to dish out the treats with new licenses. Via a press release sent out mid-day, the company revealed three new manga licenses that sound almost as unique as their leads look:

A Centaur’s Life – Kei Murayama (November 2013)
Love in Hell – Reiji Suzumaru (October 2013)
Monster Musume – OKAYADO (October 2013)

All three series will begin in the Fall of this year and are all scheduled to be released as single volume books. The similarities don’t stop there, as each title stars a non-human female character including one being a centaur-girl – weird!

… but also intriguing. Of the three, A Centaur’s Life looks the most interesting. I really like what I’ve seen of the artwork (look at that adorable art above on the right!), and the story sounds really cute simply for how simple it sounds in contrast with its characters. Centaurs, horned-devils and winged-individuals all going through the trials of being teenagers in school – it’s so odd it just might work.

Love In Hell is about a young man who dies after a drunken accident and finds himself down in Hell. There he meets a mischievous devil girl who is deigned his guide to eternal torment unless he can work with her to repent for his sins. Eep? I’m on the fence on this title – art and synopsis is enough to make me curious, but the kind of humour a series like this has can make or break it for me. We’ll see what I think when volume one comes out in October.

And lastly there’s Monster Musume, which I can definitely say has not grasped my interest. It’s not the kind of series I’d pick up voluntarily but I’m sure it’s got an audience out there who’ll love this license, which is great. Market diversity, we have it! The story takes place in a future where human beings have learned that supernatural creatures really exist. Working together to try and incorporate them into society, a government exchange program is started, one in which a male volunteer soon finds himself host to three attractive monster girls with breasts to spare and hormones to flair. Boobs.

With supernatural creatures like vampires and zombies being such cultural hits in recent years, it’s neat seeing Seven Seas try to poke part of that audience from a different angle. Lots of fan-service layered on top I doubt hurts in these instances either. You can read more detailed descriptions of each story in Seven Seas’ press release, while credit for the news originally goes to AnimeNewsNetwork.

PR: Centaurs & Succubi & Lamias, Oh My!

LOS ANGELES, February 14, 2013 – Seven Seas Entertainment is delighted to add a unique trio of supernatural manga series to its Fall 2013 lineup—the slice-of-life high school comedy, A Centaur’s Life, the devilishly naughty and irreverent Love in Hell, and the whacked out harem comedy with fantastical babes, Monster Musume.

“There’s growing interest in new stories about exotic supernatural creatures that we don’t typically see,” says Adam Arnold, Managing Editor of Seven Seas Entertainment. “Move over, vampires and zombies, there are new monsters in town!”

Each of the three series presents a twist to the typical supernatural manga:

A Centaur’s Life is a wholly original take on the slice-of-life genre, focusing on the daily school life of supernatural creatures, in particular a sweet centaur girl.

Love in Hell takes place in a setting that is endlessly fascinating—Hell—and centers on the (after)life of a regular guy and his twisted relationship to his succubus guide.

Monster Musume presents a classic harem comedy setup, but the female cast is comprised of a lamia (i.e. a snake girl), a centaur, and a harpy.

What better time to launch Love in Hell and Monster Musume than around Halloween, in October 2013? These will be followed in November 2013 by A Centaur’s Life.

Otaku USA: On The Shelf - February 13, 2013

Our snow here was short-lived, two feet of beautiful white fluff now little more than some crusty banks after a night of rain. It was rather disappointing! On the other hand, it means there’s nothing but some distance between me and new comics.

For my thoughts on the new manga out this week, you can check out my On The Shelf article for Otaku USA.

Seven Seas Finds A Fairy Tale With Dictatorial Grimoire License

Seven Seas Finds A Fairy Tale With Dictatorial Grimoire License

Seven Seas is hopping into the licensing ring for 2013 with their first new revealed title of the year:

Dictatorial Grimoire – Ayumi Kanou

“Upon receiving a posthumous letter from the dead father he never knew, (Grimm) Otogi transfers to a new school and moves into an abandoned mansion as part of his inheritance. There, he finds a manuscript that reveals the truth about his ancestors: the Brothers Grimm made a deal with mystical beings known as the Märchen Demons, who now have a claim on Otogi’s life. With a dashing male Cinderella as his guide, can Otogi Grimm unlock the power of the manuscript and stop the fairy tale demons before they destroy him first?” – Seven Seas

Seven Seas will be releasing the first volume, subtitled Cinderella, in September 2013 for $13.99/US, $15.99/CAN. Pre-orders became available for the title on Amazon (US/CAN) shortly after being listed for retailers to order from their distributor, MacMillan (source). The series is three volumes total and, like their recent release of Alice in the Country of Joker, will be a larger trim size and include a couple  full colour pages.

Dictatorial Grimoire is the artist’s second work published in English. Ayumi Kanou’s adaptation spin-off for the Tales of the Abyss games, Jade’s Secret Memories, was released by Bandai Entertainment last year.

With a pretty cover and a fairy tale basis for the story, this series sounds right up my alley. And there’s classic character gender-bending – even better! I love reading stories like this and seeing how the author incorporates and reinvents familiar faces. Amazon.jp has some preview pages for the interior artwork as well, only making me look forward to it more.

Swag Bag: Searching for Shinigami, Knife-Makers and Reasons to Smile

Swag Bag: February 10, 2013

It’s a Viz Media week for me today as I get caught up on several on-going series from their Shonen Jump, Shoujo Beat and SuBLime imprints. So many great goodies to be had! I’ve also been keeping up on their weekly digital editions of Shonen Jump, but that’d be a whole post in itself someday – and maybe it might be, if people are interested?

Toriko (Vol. 14)For now though, it’s the collected editions and I start with Bleach (Vol. 55). It’s the start of a new story arc now, which is a big relief after the previous few books which I found pretty dull and silly after the huge Aizen fight. It was fun to read scenes in this volume where everyone is chummy. Defeating Hollows and defending their town is now something the leads do between class and lunch at Ichigo’s house. However, things turn bad quick when…! Some people show up I won’t spoil, but I will say this… could you really not go for this particular mission, Uryuu? Really?!

My second dose of Shonen Jump collected was Toriko (Vol. 14). I have so much love for this series! I hope it’s selling okay, I’d hate to think of it stopping in English because of it’s… strangeness. In this volume Toriko goes off to find a missing knife-maker while Komatsu is left behind to tend to the self-confidence of the knife-maker’s disciple. While there’s some of the usual scary monsters, weird food and humanly impossible survivals, most of the volume is actually pretty light-hearted fun as Komatsu makes a new friend, and Toriko continues to treasure the friendship he has with his new partner. Ah, shonen bromance…

Then for some shoujo, I picked up Kamisama Kiss (Vol. 12). This volume looks more about the swamp yokai and her human boyfriend then Nanami and her cranky fox-demon but I see plenty of adorable and funny moments to come. Plus, Julietta Suzuki’s artwork is really gorgeous. It gets better with every book – some of the full body character spreads in this volume are fantastic!

Far less cheery a series is A Devil and Her Love Song. I bought and read volume seven the other day, and what a downer! It’s a beautifully drawn story with some really heart-wrenching emotional scenes about friendship and love, but this volume had little in the way of progress towards happy times. In fact, not only are things more strained than ever between this group, hearts of the most loyal are broken, and now we’re seeing more glimpses of Maria’s traumatic, repressed past. I need a tissue.

A Devil and her Love Song (Vol. 07)

Then it was time for some boys’ love as I work to get caught up on the three SuBLime series I’m following before their third volumes come out later this month. From one of my favourite artists, Hinako Takanaga, is Awkward Silence (Vol. 02). It’s a really cute story about a young man who can’t express his emotions outwardly, and has little inner dialouge and doodles to show what he’s really thinking inside. That’s about all there is to it, alongside his caring, baseball playing, boyfriend. More adorable hijinks shall occur, I’m sure.

Quite the opposite communication-wise is Bond of Dreams, Bond of Love (Vol. 02) where the lead character is a little pretty boy who is very open and direct about what he wants, and that happens to be an older friend who works at a neighbouring shrine and who cared for him growing up. Drama! And the fine line of underage dating – beware!

While in that series’ it’s the smaller who tries to control the situation, in His Favourite (Vol. 02), I’m confident that the smaller guy is going to continue being freaked out and unsure about the frequent advances of his popular and good-looking friend, whose insistence on loving him brings the ire of his school’s female fans. I really love Suzuki Tanaka’s art style, especially when she draws really cleanly and more ‘cartoonish’. His Favourite is a little more BL generic looking for her titles, but there’s a short story at the end of this second volume that I love the look of and really catches what I try to describe so flimsily as cartoonish.

Cross Dressing, Breasts & Barely Legal: Project-H Licenses Five New Titles

Cross Dressing, Breasts & Barely Legal: Project-H Licenses Five New Titles

Project-H added five new titles to their license library over the weekend:

Club for Cross Dressers – Jo Soo Bu
September 2014 ($17.95/US, $19.99/CAN)

Coffin of Cerebrum – Tokihara Masato
June 2014 ($19.95/US, $21.99/CAN)

Fantasy Hentai: School Girls – Shikishirokonomi
November 2014 ($19.95/US, $21.99/CAN)

The Tale of Boobs: Chichi Monogatari – Ohkami Ryosuke
December 2012 ($19.95/US, $21.99/CAN)

You See, Teacher… (Vol. 01) – Tachibana Ei
September 2014 ($17.95/US, $19.99/CAN)

These new books were initially announced via their Twitter account.

Like all Project-H books, these are absolutely not for kids! All five books are scheduled for print releases, while Chichi Monogatari and Coffin of Cerebrum are also getting digital releases. There haven’t been many Project-H licenses granted digital rights but it looks like the Japanese publishers are opening up more and more on that front. You can read bit more about that in my recent interview with Project-H’s VP of Sales & Distribution.

Though the majority of these books don’t interest me, I was immediately intrigued by Club for Cross Dressers and You See, Teacher... Pretty boys cross dressing! Though Project-H’s My Cute Crossdresser ended up being pretty unmemorable, I can’t deny my like of the subject. The art styles are also way more to my liking also (see image above). You can see previews of these two titles on Amazon.jp: Club for Cross Dressers & You See, Teacher… 18+ only of course!

Take me back to the top!
